Friends of White Flint consciously models itself on several similar organizations in Arlington, Virginia, including Clarendon and Ballston. That’s because Arlington has already gone through the transformation envisioned for White Flint. FoWF’s inaugural Speaker’s Series event in May featured Arlington Board member Chris Zimmerman discussing the transformation of Arlington into a new community focussed on Metro transit.
Now Arlington has prepared a lengthy video chronicling its transformation through Smart Growth. The Maryland Dept of Transportation recommended it to us, and it’s a great explanation, even for those who don’t know anything about “Smart Growth.”
Quotes from the film: “Our traffic today is less than in the 1970’s, yet our population has doubled, and our office use has doubled.” “We’ve put development on 11% of our land, so we can protect our neighborhoods.”
