On Thursday, July 16, 2009, the Montgomery County Planning Board will consider final revisions to the staff’s draft of the White Flint Sector Plan. This is the version of the Plan which the Board worked on at its last meeting on June 18. The staff included the changes the Planning Board made on June 18, and also considered the changes proposed by Friends of White Flint.…

The White Flint Sector Plan describes the community amenities the Montgomery County Planning Board would like to see in the new White Flint. Among several more mundane amenities (fire and rescue, parks) is the addition of a new section on farmers’ markets. The Planning Board suggested that the County encourage a farmers market within White Flint.…

Rockville Pike is the main north-south route through White Flint. It carries a heavy traffic load and an accident or traffic incident can cause chaos.
Yet early Thursday evening, just as rush hour was winding down, traffic southbound came to an abrupt and unexpected halt. Brakes screeched, tail lights flared angrily, some cars at the end of the pack swerved violently from lane to lane, others fish-tailed between the lane markings.…

One of the models for urban-style development in Montgomery County is Rockville Town Center. The glitzy redevelopment is packed on weekends, but still some businesses are saying that people are staying away because of parking problems. Originally, parking was free in the three local garages; now it costs $1 per hour.…

The 37-page document does an excellent job of responding to the biannual requirements, and its 16 appendices are quite formidable. At a June 22, 2009, public hearing on the county Growth Policy, 22 county residents testified, and an additional 24 residents submitted written comments (according to the Montgomery County Planning Staff, 23 of the 24 written responses were from residents of Kensington or Garrett Park). Several expressed concerns about the amount of density proposed in the White Flint Sector Plan, claiming that the growth would not be mitigated by transportation improvements.…

The Montgomery County Planning Board is considering the staff’s draft of the White Flint Sector Plan. The schedule for further consideration has been fluid, since the Board was working through the staff draft in fits and starts.
