Friends of White Flint is primarily a public education organization, promoting the philosophy of New Urbanism: walkable, sustainable, engaging communities. Part of our outreach effort is sponsoring a series of speakers to discuss urban planning and design topics.

Our most recent Speakers’ Series event featured Chris Zimmerman, from the Arlington County Board and then the Chair of Metro, discussing Arlington’s journey from traffic-clogged, parking-lot covered strip-mall suburb, to a hub of smart growth-oriented economic activity clustered around Metro.…

Thousands of Montgomery County residents have learned about, and participated in, the White Flint planning effort. Last year, after the final report from the Planning Board’s White Flint Advisory Group, the Planning Board established a new, smaller White Flint Steering Committee to participate in the worksessions on the Plan. Randolph Hills is the largest community near White Flint, just to the east of the Sector, across the railroad tracks. For many years, the low- and moderate-income community languished in the shadow of stronger, more active neighbors to the south and west. But a few years ago, a new group of civic leaders began forging a new community spirit, leading to positions in the White Flint Advisory Group and Friends of White Flint.…

The Gazette‘s beat reporter for White Flint, Jen Beasley, has an article out this week on the upcoming Montgomery County Council’s busy agenda for the next few weeks: the Commercial/Residential Zone, an incentive-based attempt to encourage mixed-use development; the West Gaithersburg master plan, including the new Science City biotech haven; the newly-announced Kensington Master Plan; and, of course, the White Flint Sector Plan.…
