White Flint Mall Redevelopment

White Flint Mall redevelopment took another step forward last week.   As we’ve reported, Lord & Taylor filed for an injunction last year to halt the revelopment of the mall property.  This was denied in December and Lord & Taylor filed an appeal.  That appeal hit a snag last week when a federal judge upheld the original denial, clearing the way for White Flint Mall to proceed.

The February 10th meeting began with the mention of no new development taking place throughout the White Flint sector currently. The Pike and Rose development is continuing nicely with their first Phase.

Many who presently live in the car-centric White Flint area have trouble envisioning our lives without our vehicles.  But, as I share with some frequency, there is a rising trend among the younger generation to avoid cars altogether.  Young adults and, particularly young professionals, are graduating from school with mountains of debt and find themselves reluctant to assume more in the form of a car.

La Madeleine Closed, but not for long

La Madeleine in Mid-Pike Plaza is now closed.  But, don’t fret, this community staple will return soon as part of Pike & Rose’s first phase.  Starting this fall, you’ll find La Madeleine in Block 12 (PerSei) of Pike & Rose.  Chipotle is also moving to Block 13, around the corner from Starbucks and Bank of America.

The enhancement of the street grid throughout White Flint is going to both improve connectivity and act to diffuse traffic that presently has fewer travel options.  We’ve written extensively about the planned Western Workaround, which will straighten Executive Boulevard on the west side of Rockville Pike and add new Market Street.

We’ve learned that Pinstripes, a combination bowling lane, bocce court and bistro, has signed a letter of intent to anchor the entertainment portion of Phase 2 at Pike & Rose.  According to Washington Business Journal, the concept will occupy “30,000 square feet on two levels” and offer an “experience unlike any other in Montgomery County.”  At last check, this chunk of Phase 2 is expected in 2016.…

The next White Flint Sector Plan Implementation Advisory Committee meeting will take place on Monday, February 10, 2014, 7 p.m., at Wall Local Park/ Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center. The White Flint Sector Plan Implementation Advisory Committee is an overview committee appointed by the Planning Board in 2010.  It’s comprised of property owners, resident groups and representatives from the county’s Executive Branch.…
