Our region’s subway system is only major transit system in the nation without a dedicated source of funding. For over 40 years, this lack of permanent funds has meant that to keep going, the system has had to constantly and repeatedly secure monies from Maryland, Virginia and DC, as well as the federal government. And for over 40 years, maintenance, repairs , and capitol improvements have been delayed or deferred. The result? Train and bus riders have paid the price in delays, single tracking, station shutdowns, and service cutbacks.
Currently, the Maryland legislature is considering bills that will provide Maryland’s share of a dedicated funding source for Metro capitol improvements.
(Please note that this Maryland bill will only take effect if Virginia and DC also provide their fair share of funding to Metro. Metro funding bills are currently making their way through the Virginia legislature.)
Contact your Maryland legislators today and tell them you want dedicated, bondable funding for Metro using the link below.
Tell your representatives you support HB 372 / SB 277. Contact your elected officials and tell them it’s time for Metro to have reliable funds for capitol improvements.
