The Montgomery County Planning Board does much of its work on the White Flint Sector Plan in worksessions organized around topics. Live streaming video is available at: www.montgomeryplanningboard.org.

Today’s topics are:

  • implementation and financing updates, featuring Jacob Sesker, Planner Coordinator in the Vision Division, who explains what this will all cost, and how to pay for it (which includes a timing factor, since financing and implementing the Board’s vision will take time),
  • reviewing the public testimony and comments on implementation issues from the January 12, 2009, hearing on the White Flint Sector Plan Public Hearing Draft, and
  • discussing the County Executive’s views on various aspects of the Plan.

I had a real interesting conversation with a 22 year old today who has been following the White Flint Sector Plan very closely and this came out of our conversation.  When I asked her opinion of why people are either in favor of or against the proposed changes in White Flint, and very few are indifferent, here was her response.…

Another organization has urged the Montgomery County Planning Board to consider the privately-prepared Glatting-Jackson redesign for Rockville Pike. The Action Committee for Transit, www.actfortransit.org, told the Board that “we share the view of other citizens and business groups that Glatting Jackson’s design for Rockville Pike is superior to the recommendation of the Planning Board staff.…

One of the most contentious relationships in the White Flint Sector Plan process has been between White Flint Mall and the neighborhood to its south, Garrett Park Estates – White Flint Park. There is a long history of strife, dating from before the Mall’s construction in the early 1970’s. Accusations of broken promises, indifference and more have flown.…

The Montgomery County Planning Board is holding a hastily-scheduled worksession on some topics which couldn’t be addressed at the last meeting for lack of time. Streaming video should be available at www.montgomerycountyplanning.org. Topics include transportation and school sites. The Board also decided to revisit the design for the revitalized Rockville Pike: there are two competing visions for the Pike, one by Planning staff, which would put busses, cars and bikes into a shared-use lane at the curb, and one by Glatting-Jackson, an international transportation and walkability consulting firm from Orlando, Florida, which has proposed a design with transit lanes in a wide green median.…
