Comments Off on Trip Generation Rates in the New White Flint
I was reading two great books on urbanism that inspired me to submit my first post to the FLOG! The first book is called “The Option of Urbanism” by Chris Leinberger and the second is “Home From Nowhere” by James Kunstler. I am thinking of buying some extra copies if anyone on the steering committee is interested in reading them. … Read More
Comments Off on Parks and Recreation: A Proposal
It doesn’t seem as if the Planning Board will have much time to go over parks and recreation in the White Flint Sector Plan Public Hearing Draft work sessions. I prepared a brief presentation on the topic, covering the existing facilities, the proposals in the Public Hearing Draft, and a suggestion to provide more recreation space at little or no cost:
Comments would be appreciated. … Read More
Comments Off on Proposed Upcoming Work Session Schedule
The Staff memo for Thursday’s Montgomery County Planning Board meeting includes a proposed schedule for upcoming work sessions on the White Flint Sector Plan (the Planning Board does much of its work on particular details of the Sector Plan in work sessions; the White Flint Steering Committee comments to the Board during these sessions):
March 5 Worksession #3: Land Use and Zoning/Property Owners Presentations [see earlier post for more]
March 19 Worksession #4: Continuation of Land Use and Zoning/Property Owners Presentations; Public Facilities: School [siting for a new elementary school is a hot topic in the plan], MARC station [two competing proposals for location of a new commuter railroad station]
April 9 Worksession #5: Environment and Design Guidelines [Sustainability is a generally-accepted goal in the plan; but there is some disagreement about the amount of permeable land and green tree cover to be required] [the design guidelines are a new feature of this Master Plan process, and may change expectations and proposals without going through the full zoning process].… Read More

Comments Off on Fair Warning: Friends of White Flint to seek contributions
Friends of White Flint is a nonprofit corporation, which has been funded entirely by small personal contributions from the founders. The FoWF Board of Directors has authorized consideration of several new projects, including expanding the web-based services and information outreach we provide, which will cost significantly more than the currently tiny budget.… Read More

Comments Off on Future Planning Board Work Sessions
The Montgomery County Planning Board does much of its work on the White Flint Sector Plan in “work sessions.” These work sessions generally have a topic, which is presented by one or more speakers, and then the Board discusses the topic with the White Flint Steering Committee.
The next work session is scheduled for March 5, 2009, and will feature a discussion of various development proposals for the Sector.… Read More
Comments Off on Next White Flint Meeting: March 5
The next meeting of the Montgomery County Planning Board to discuss the White Flint Sector Plan will be held on March 5, at 9AM in Silver Spring, 8787 Georgia Ave.
The topic will be land use, and the focus will be on individual development project proposals. Just like during the Advisory Group meetings, developers and their representatives will present their ideas and argue how each is better than: a) the status quo, and b) everybody else’s idea.… Read More
Live blogged from the Steering Group’s meeting with Planning Board staffer and economics/financing wizard Jacob Sesker (mostly Sesker’s comments, with a few questions and comments interspersed):
Private implementation costs, public implementation costs, and mixed costs, called “district” costs.
Rockville Pike is about $66 million, Streets another $61 million. The majority of the district roads are in the middle of the sector plan.… Read More
