Metro’s Position on the Public Hearing Draft

Metro’s Position on the Public Hearing Draft

Since the video is not yet available from last night’s hearing, here are┬ásome notes and commentary on the position of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (“Metro”):

Metro didn’t have a lot to say about the Public Hearing Draft, which envisions a new White Flint centered around the White Flint Metro Station, with Rapid Bus Transit lanes, and other transit-oriented features. I caught only two messages:

Don’t mess with our bus garage and parking facility. Located next to the Metro Station, this property is in the middle of prime property off Nicholson Lane, and across the street from the property Metro leased to developer LCOR a few years back. But Metro’s point was that it would be difficult to replace the bus maintenance and storage facilities available in White Flint with anything comparable nearby. But Metro is quite amenable to new zoning or improvements which would add “additional land value and an opportunity for expansion or elimination.”

Metro’s second point was that they did not want the White Flint Plan to “limit [their] operational flexibility.”
