Latest Parks Recommendations

Regular readers will recall that I have been preparing recommendations for changes in the Parks Section of the White Flint Sector Plan. On April 17, 2009, the Planning staff issued a brief memo describing some parks plans. The proposed FoWF Parks statement has been updated to reflect the staff memo. Comments are welcome, but the memo will be presented as soon as Wednesday, so comments must be received by close of business Tuesday.

Here is the latest draft: Parks Recommendations

I think these are all good recommendations — I have two suggestions:
(1) You might want to tie the idea of active recreation together with active transportation. In other words, frame the request for connections among parks, businessess, and residential neighborhoods in terms of the need to provide for active recreation opportunities while simultaneously making it easier for people to walk or bicycle to and from work and home. The goal of getting people out to exercise and have fun is complementary to the goal of minimizing the need to take short trips in automobiles in and through the sector.
(2) It could not hurt to specifically mention the variety of recreational users who need connections (in the form of trails, sidewalks) and streets that can be crossed safely without using a car. I hope you will consider mentioning bicyclists as well as runners, walkers, roller bladers, and others whose need for access to recreation and transportation links within and beyond the sector should be considered.
