Pike Central Farm Market
Wondering what to make with all the yummy food you buy at Pike Central Farm Market? You can find loads of recipes on their website, but we’re sharing a couple of especially good ones here. (And don’t forget … you can find locally grown fruit and veggies, all-natural meat, gourmet baked goods, artisan bread, fresh eggs, handcrafted soaps, and lots of other goods and food at the Farmers Market every Saturday from 9 to 1:30 at 5992 Executive Blvd.)
Tomato & Basil Salad
  • 4-5 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 2 lb. firm tomatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 6-8 fresh basil leaves, torn into 2-3 pieces
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Crusty bread
Combine first three ingredients; let stand at least 20 minutes.
Arrange tomato on a serving platter and top with basil. Pour oil to coat over top. Pour marinade over top. Let stand, basting occasionally, several hours. Serve with bread.
Ginger Garlic Green Beans
  • 1 pound fresh green beans
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 Tbsp. soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. fresh grated ginger
  • 2 tsp. rice vinegar (not seasoned)
  • 1 Tbsp. sunflower or safflower oil
  • 1/2 tsp. Asian sesame oil
  • 1 1⁄2 tsp. sesame seeds, toasted
Cook the beans in salt water until tender (5-7 minutes). Plunge into ice water to stop cooking, drain and dry on paper towels.
Stir together rice vinegar, soy sauce and sesame oil.
Heat a large skillet with safflower oil and add in garlic. When the garlic starts to color, add the ginger. Add in the green beans and sauté for 1-2 minutes, then add the vinegar, soy sauce and sesame oil mixture. Cook until the beans are glazed, then toss in the sesame seeds.

Something Unique at the Farmers Market

The Pike Central Farmers Market will offer some unique entertainment tomorrow morning.  From 9:30am – 12:30pm, come out to enjoy the music of jazz singer (and Friend of White Flint) Christiana Drapkin as her alter-ego “Organ Grinder Lola.”

From OrganGrinderLola.com:

Organ Grinder Lola brings her beautiful hand-crafted German street organ, Scharmanka, to another Saturday morning at this popular farmers market. Come support our regional farmers and food producers. Delicious bread and pastries, jams and pickles, seafood, fresh meat. And the bounty of the early summer harvest: fresh peas, cherries, strawberries, rhubarb, curious things that you’ll have to ask what it is and how to prepare it. Don’t you love it? I’ll be there again, as Organ Grinder Lola, spinning melodies on my beautiful organ. Bring the kids, or come by yourself and feel like a kid. These old-fashioned sounds and the marvelous looking organ always bring big smiles to our listeners. Looking forward to seeing you there!

New Location for Pike Central Farm Market

Bethesda Now has brought us some news about our local farmers’ market. With the exciting Pike & Rose construction happening in the Mid-Pike Plaza, the Pike Central Farm Market is moving to a new location. The farmers’ market will now be located at 11561 Old Georgetown Road, only a few blocks away from the old location. The market will set-up in the large bus parking lot on the corner of Old Georgetown Road and Executive Boulevard. This lot is a future site for Gable’s mixed-use residential development.

The market will re-open on April 26th. For more information about Central Farm Market, check out their website!
