Our Crosswalk Ribbon Cutting Celebration was an Extraordinary Success!

County Executive Ike Leggett, County Council President Roger Berliner, MCDOT Director Al Roshdieh, Friends of White Flint Executive Director Amy Ginsburg, and Coalition for Smarter Growth Montgomery Advocacy Manager Pete Tomao cut the ribbon yesterday on the wonderful new crosswalks in the Pike District.

“We are here to serve the community, so I value the support from residents and groups, such as the Friends of White Flint and Coalition for Smarter Growth, as we create an environment that supports a first rate multi-modal transportation system,” said Ike Leggett. “Building a balanced, comprehensive network that encourages more walking, bicycling, and transit use is our path forward to great economic progress and shared prosperity.”

In his remarks, MCDOT Director Al Roshdieh listed many upcoming projects (in addition to the already-completed gorgeous newly-striped crosswalks) to enhance walkability, bikeability, and access to transit. We are beyond thrilled about these new projects to make walking in the Pike District pleasant, efficient, and safe.

  • Through striping, create high visibility crosswalks at 25 locations
  • White Flint Western Workaround
  • RideOn extRa launching October 2

Join County Executive Ike Leggett at Walkable Wednesday September 27

We are beyond thrilled that County Executive Ike Leggett will be joining MCDOT Director Al Roshdieh to cut the ribbon on the wonderful new striped crosswalks popping up all over the Pike District.

The ribbon cutting will take place at our third Walkable Wednesday, September 27 at 6pm at the intersection of  Nicholson Lane and Executive Boulevard . These new crosswalks — and other pedestrian improvements we should be seeing soon — are a direct result of our advocacy through the Pike District Pedestrian Safety Campaign.

Please join Ike Leggett and Al Roshdieh and join us next Wednesday!

Walk with us on Walkable Wednesdays!

Come join Friends of White Flint and Coalition for Smarter Growth on two special walking tours on Walkable Wednesdays. Learn what makes it pleasant  … and what makes it more difficult … to walk safely around the Pike District/White Flint area. This informative and fun tour is part of our Pike District Pedestrian Campaign. (Feel free to share this unique opportunity with your friends and neighbors!)

Our first walk is Wednesday, June 7 at 7:30 pm. I know you won’t want to miss it!

This and That

We’re cancelling the Pike District Pedestrian Campaign petition signature canvassing scheduled for Thursday due to the biblical rain and flooding Capital Weather Gang is predicting.  We’re re-scheduling for Thursday, October 6th. Please volunteer for either a before work, after work, or lunchtime shift by emailing info@whiteflint.org.

Apply for membership to the Pedestrian, Bicycle, and Traffic Safety Advisory Committee.  (See link below).  They  have two vacancies from members who have completed their second terms; these two vacancies will be filled by new applicants.   If you know of any prospective candidates who would be good members of the committee  (including yourself), they need to apply by the Friday, September 30 deadline. Applicants of diverse backgrounds, professions, gender, geography, disability and ethnicity are encouraged to apply. As the announcement linked below describes, applications are to be submitted on line.

Currently, there is no member from the White Flint area on the committee.  It would be great to have a strong White Flint/Pike District advocate on the committee.
